The NIC108 Buy American Gift Guide 2011

I’m happy to present the second annual NIC108 gift guide! Last year was such a big success I decided to do it again, but with a twist…

This year I’ve decided to bring the focus to the USA. With the help of my hubby, I compiled a list of gift ideas that were either made right here in the USA, or a local/domestic business you should check out.

Why buy American made? Well, simply put – to support the (struggling) American economy. The average American may not have the time and dedication to make grandiose political waves, but seeing as though we live in a capitalistic society we do have the power to “vote with our dollar.” Therefore, by the rules of supply and demand, if we demand (and pay for) quality American made products they (the companies) will supply them, right?

Personally, I believe one quality made, slightly more expensive domestic product is better than a few cheaply made Chinese products. Call me a minimalist, but less is more.

A few things to note about the gift guide…

Price key $ = 0-30 USD / $$ = 31-75 USD / $$$ = 75-150 USD / $$$$ = 151 & up

Enjoy!

Bunch of Crock

*warning this post contains adult language

Safwat Saleem is the graphic designer behind these hilarious posters. He is Pakistani and has been living in the US since before 9/11. Saleem says this project is a “gag reflex” to the current political climate and believes things have only gotten worse since 2001.

I am really digging the minimal use of color in junction with basic transparent shapes on a textured background. It’s kinda hard these days to be original with vintage photos from “pleasentville” but I’d say he nailed it. If only more people channeled their anger towards politics into making sweet designs…

Bunch of Crock currently consists of 12 posters, as well as buttons, stickers, postcards, and some other goodies that you can purchase here. Saleem even put on a full exhibition for the project which I believe included this box of bullshit. Below each poster is a quote, fact or an anecdote that served as the inspiration for that particular poster.

Earth
‘’It’s a flat-out lie. I read my Bible. He made this earth for us to utilize.’’
– Norman Dennison, electrician and founder of the Corydon (Indiana) Tea Party, speaking about climate change

‘’Being a strong Christian, I cannot help but believe the Lord placed a lot of minerals in our country and it’s not there to destroy us.’’
– Lisa Deaton, small business owner and founder of WeThePeopleIndiana.org

Democrats
‘’I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan.”
– President Barack Obama, August 13, 2010 at a White House Ramadan dinner

”I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there. was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.’’
– President Barack Obama, August 14, 2010

Republicans
‘’They [illegal immigrants] use it as a wedge. This is an orchestrated effort by them to come here and have children to gain access to the great welfare state we’ve created.”
– Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, defending his idea of rewriting the 14th Amendment

Libertarians
‘’We do not want to be told how to behave in matters of personal safety. We do not want to be forced to wear seat belts or helmets because others think that it is good for us.”
– Robert Ford, chairman of Massachusetts Freedom First

Tea Party
“Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn’t even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas… it is a part of earth’s life cycle. And yet we are being told that we have to reduce this natural substance and reduce the American standard of living.”
– Rep. Michele Bachmann on the House floor on Earth Day, 2009

Patriotism
‘’Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies. And I know you’re not. I’m not accusing you of being an enemy, but that’s the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way.”
– Glenn Beck, conservative news commentator, to Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to be elected to the House of Representatives

***This project was made possible through Kickstarter. Check out the link and watch the video to learn more about Saleem. While you are there check out the other designers/artists trying to make it in the world

Yucky! L&E Postcard

This is pretty hilarious… The Chicago Logan Square restaurant, Longman & Eagle, took their “favorite” Yelp review and turned it into a nicely designed postcard. They are currently on sale at the restaurant.

Longman & Eagle also recently opened 6 guest rooms (attached to the restaurant I assume) that you can stay in for a little over $100 a night. Check out the photos below…

Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

Kiva

Donation/Loan

Ok this one deserves a long description…

“Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.

Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.

Kiva was born of the following beliefs:

  • People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way.
  • The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.
  • By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another.

Kiva promotes:

  • Dignity: Kiva encourages partnership relationships as opposed to benefactor relationships. Partnership relationships are characterized by mutual dignity and respect.
  • Accountability: Loans encourage more accountability than donations where repayment is not expected.
  • Transparency: The Kiva website is an open platform where communication can flow freely around the world.

As of November 2009, Kiva has facilitated over $100 million in loans.”

Book Review : 10 Things You Need to Eat…

Usually I like food books with lots of vibrant photos, but for some reason the lack of photos in this book does not phase me at all. 10 Things You Need to Eat and more than 100 Easy and Delicious Ways to Prepare Them is half information and half recipes.  It is written by two friends one  is a chef, and the other a pseudo health-nut. My favorite part about the book is how these 10 things are readily available items, not exotic fruit from the far corners of the earth. Some of the foods on the list are tomatoes, nuts, avocados, quinoa, and berries – not bad, right?

These guys really did their research too. There are tons of facts and some go with fun little illustrations. They also have honorable mention foods like olive oil and cinnamon. The book definitely gets extra points for listing must have staple ingredients, and their uses.

So far I have cooked the quinoa stuffed peppers, and the avocado risotto (originally avocado shrimp risotto but we modified) and both dishes were a hit. Next I am looking to make the avocado chocolate brownies (whaaa?) I know sounds crazy, but I guess avocados are a great healthy substitute for butter.
